It’s a fun-filled night of talking smack and fighting for dominance of the mind.
The Alzheimer Society of Windsor and Essex County held its 11th annual Battle of the Brains fundraiser Friday night at the Ciociaro Club.
“People are here to be competitive,” said Eugene van Wyk, the Alzheimer society’s director of Fund Development and Community Engagement. They talk smack to each other. It’s a great evening. Everyone is super competitive and people really do come very excited.”
The quiz competition pits local brainiacs against each other in the battle for bragging rights while raising money to help run the organization’s services.
For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the competition’s 135 teams duked it out in person.
“We’re super excited because everyone is back in human form,” said van Wyk.
Along with the satisfaction of knowing they’re smarter than everyone, the winning team gets a big trophy.
The $440 entry fee for each eight-person team also included a three-course dinner, door prizes, and a 50/50 draw.
The annual event has raised about $300,000 in 11 years.
“Everything gets used for the services we provide to our clients,” said van Wyk. “All the funds stay within Windsor-Essex and it goes to help people living with dementia.”
