Mangold Shoots Down Indy 5 Fan Theory

Twenty-four hours after the first trailer for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” went online, the film’s director James Mangold has fired back at some of the fan rumors swirling around.

Fans have been micro analyzing the shot-for-shot trailer along with speculating wildly about what the Dial of Destiny actually is, with all sorts of predictions from the Nazis trying to build a TARDIS, to an ancient Greek artifact judging by the temple shot.

The rumor that has consistently swirled for some time now though is that the film involves time travel in some capacity, which has led to one of the more wild theories being that Indiana Jones will go back in time and erase himself, in the process having Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character Helena completing all of Indy’s actual adventures.

Mangold previously shot down a fan who tweeted this theory saying “not true”. Today, Mangold went further with a response on social media that doesn’t shoot down time travel element per se, but certainly slams any ‘erasure of Indy’ talk:

“One more time. No one is ‘taking over’ or replacing Indy or donning his hat, nor is he being ‘erased’ thru some contrivance – and he never was, not in any cut or script – but trolls will troll – that’s how they get their clicks.

Please don’t exhaust me pointing out how once in a while a troll is ‘right’. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now & then. Everyone has to do is look at set photos & interviews & you get enough info to make wild guesses about a movie plot.”

Jez Butterworth John-Henry Butterworth and Mangold co-wrote the script for the new entry which Spielberg will produce and will mark 80-year-old Harrison Ford’s final outing as the famed archeology professor and adventurer. He’s joined by Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, and Toby Jones in the film.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” opens June 30th.
