Atlanta started out well versus the Astros this past weekend, winning 6-2 Friday and 5-4 Saturday. In the Sunday finale the Braves had an early lead but ultimately lost in a walk-off 5-4. Starter Charlie Morton went 6.0 innings with two earned on five hits and two walks.
For the starter job in the Monday game, the Braves will go with Jake Odorizzi. In his 15 starts this year Odorizzi is 4-5 with a 4.15 ERA. In 73.2 innings he has 54 Ks overall.
Over on the Pirates’ side, they beat the Reds 5-4 on Friday but then lost big 10-1 in game two. On Sunday Pittsburgh was out-hit 13-10 in a 9-5 defeat. Zach Thompson posted 5.0 innings in the start with three earned on eight hits and three walks.
As starting pitcher Monday the Pirates will send out Roansy Contreras. Across 13 games (10 starts) in 2022 Contreras is 3-3 with a 4.02 ERA. Over 56.0 innings he has 25 earned on 53 hits and 26 walks with 53 Ks.
The Braves are 52-20 in their last 72 overall and 19-7 in their last 26 on grass. The over is 4-0-2 in Atlanta’s last six in game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 9-23 in their last 32 overall and 14-37 in their last 51 Monday games. Pitt is 2-8 in their last 10 in game one of a series.
PICK: I’m going to try the Braves. Odorizzi is going to need some help from the Atlanta bats and pen, however. In his last three outings, Odorizzi is 0-2 with nine earned in 13.2 combined innings. He’s coming off five earned in 5.0 innings against the Mets. As for Contreras, he put up four earned in 6.0 innings his last time up but did have a nice outing versus the Reds prior to that. Should be a fun one.
